TOURISM DEVELOPMENT ROOTED IN AN ECOLOGICALLY SENSITIVE CONTEXT
Nature-based tourism is gaining traction in India with immense potential for exposure to ecological landscapes and challenges of balancing mass tourism. The suggested interventions need to balance stringent controls of the Forest Department with ambitious plans of the Tourism department.
The destination development project focuses on the stretch of Kali River between the shutters of Supa Dam and close to Dandeli town. The stretch is popular for white water rafting with the release of water from Supa Dam/ Reservoir.
Dynamic river-forest interface
Master plan with minimal intrusions
Core area with minimal footprints for amenities
Entry defined by courts and amenities
Visitor spaces for informal use
Decks as the interface with the river
The prime features of the development area is centered on environmental components and hence regional and site contextual studies are important guides to formulate the tourism and development agenda for the region. While the regional studies focus on environmental parameters, the site contextual studies would focus on anthropogenic components of tourism such as existing infrastructure and amenities, socio-economic dynamics of the community, visitor trends, etc.
The proposal is a series of careful insertions along the forested river bank, creating valuable experiences for visitors while maintain the pristine nature of the site.
The project is part of the larger vision for the state drawn by the Karnataka Tourism Vision Group with the joint responsibility of the Toursim and Forest departments of the Government of Karnataka.
