INTENSE LANDSCAPE DEVELOPMENT OF A GREENFIELD CAMPUS
Learning environments provide great opportunities for creative interpretation of external spaces. The process can be compounded in closely built spaces catering to a very large number of learners. With every available open space occupied by designated uses such as sports and games areas, the challenge is to be able to creatively interpret incidental and interstitial open spaces in a manner that they contribute positively to the everyday experience.
Primary school Sculpture & Art court
Art courts as spillover terraced spaces
Courtyards as active spaces during a break
Gradual transition from enclosed to open spaces
Large capacity amphiteatre in soft construction
Amphi area as informal lunch space
Treated grass surface for all season use
Productive and educational interstitial spaces
Soft transitions within large built volumes
Shaded courts as assembly spaces
Negotiating the steep terrain with functional spaces
Courts with defined elements for multi-functional use
A greenfield development, the institutional campus accommodated multiple learning centres catering to a wide age group. All external spaces have been conceived as multifunctional ones – at different times of the day and for different users. Given the challenging terrain with steep slopes, the landscape response is one of passive construction using local materials – such an approach maximises the site potential while creating a wide range of spatial qualities.
A carefully curated vegetation palette ensures the biodiversity addresses educational, recreational and ecological needs of the site and its users.

Sri Kumaran’s Children Home Education Centre is located on the outskirts of Bangalore, India.
