DEVELOPING AN INTEGRATED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Learning environments have been traditionally confined to designated classrooms with a variety of tools developed as teaching aids. The outdoors – play fields, gardens, open spaces – are seen as a respite from the structured learning environments. Given the gradual shifts in the pedagogy, it is critical that all spaces – built & unbuilt, enclosed & open, man-made & natural – are recognised as positive learning environments. The current pedagogy at Shikshantar already allows for several lateral teaching and learning processes. To extend this to the outdoors is a natural progression for the school. The design process followed was an iterative one, with extensive discussions and design workshops with the teachers, academic co-ordinators and administrators of the institution.

A scaled & tangible experience of the planetary orbits
Apart from standard treatment of external spaces with defined play areas, every available space is treated and articulated in a sensitive manner addressing the complex needs of a growing individual. Spaces are developed thematically to integrate with the pedagogy for each subject and different age groups. The mathematics garden, for example, appeals to the very young by showcasing symmetry while the older ones can explore the Fibonacci series found in nature. Abstractions of the physical universe are expressed as the planetary objects and orbits to scale while the sub-continent’s geography is embedded in a large plaza. Spaces for performance are curated to meet varying needs including individual role-play, story-telling and grand performances. Specific parts of the landscape are dedicated for exploring the sciences, arts, sports and play to maximise engagement of all the senses.
Shikshantar is an existing school in Gurugram near New Delhi.
